Why sanitise a toothbrush
A toothbrush spends its life in the dampest room of the house, often uncovered, sometimes a metre from the toilet. The bristles stay wet for hours after brushing, and moisture is exactly what micro-organisms need to survive. It isn't alarming — your mouth already hosts plenty — but between two brushings, a head that dries badly gets recontaminated every time.
Glow Brush is a case that encloses the brush head, exposes it to type C ultraviolet light for three minutes, then switches itself off.
How UV-C works
Type C ultraviolet is the most energetic part of the ultraviolet spectrum. At a wavelength of around 254 nanometres, it damages the genetic material of micro-organisms and stops them multiplying. It is the same principle used for decades to treat water and air in hospitals — on an entirely different scale.
The manufacturer states a 99.9 % reduction of micro-organisms on the bristles after a three-minute cycle. We report that figure as it was given to us: we have not commissioned independent testing, and we would rather say so than present it as our own measurement.
One thing matters: UV-C only acts on what it lights up. A badly positioned head, or very dense bristles shading each other, reduces the effect. That is also why the cycle lasts three minutes rather than ten seconds.
Day to day
- Rinse the brush after use and shake off the excess water.
- Place the head in the case, bristles up, and close it: the cycle starts on its own.
- Three minutes later it stops. The LED shows status and battery level.
- A charge lasts about thirty days in normal use. USB-C recharging.
An infrared sensor cuts the lamp if the case opens mid-cycle: UV-C must never be looked at directly.
What it does not do
Let's be clear. Glow Brush does not extend the life of a toothbrush: bristles splay with use, and a brush with deformed bristles cleans badly however clean it is. You still need to replace it every three months, or sooner after an infection.
It does not replace brushing, flossing or a scale and polish either. It is equipment hygiene, not treatment.
Fit and installation
The case takes the vast majority of brush heads, manual and electric. It stands on a surface or mounts on a wall with the supplied adhesive, no drilling. Compact enough for a wash bag.
Common questions
A cycle after every brushing? Not necessary. One cycle a day, in the evening, is enough in most cases.
Is it dangerous? UV-C harms eyes and skin on direct exposure. The case is closed during the cycle and the sensor cuts the lamp when it opens. Keep out of reach of children.
Does it use much power? No. Around thirty days of use per USB-C charge of a few hours.
What about travel? That is one of its best uses: the brush travels enclosed, away from the rest of the bag.
